How To Use The NYC Subway As A Tourist

The New York City subway system is one of the most efficient and convenient ways to get around the city. While it may seem intimidating to tourists, it's an essential part of the NYC experience that shouldn't be missed. Here's a guide on how to use the subway, including tips on navigating the busiest stations and times.

  1. Consider getting an OMNY card You no longer need a MetroCard to ride the Subway. The MTA has gone fully contactless and you can now use any credit card with an RFID chip to get into any station with a simple tap. We visited recently and found it to be so simple. But, if you are planning to use the Subway heavily during your trip, getting an OMNY card may save you a little money. This great link will provide everything you need to know about OMNY.

  2. Navigate the subway map The subway system can be confusing, and while there are maps in every station to help you navigate, we found that they could be hard to find and understand. Plus, you really look like a tourist when you are standing in the station, staring at the map looking confused. Plan ahead and get to know the stations around the locations you are visiting ahead of time and make note of them. Also, use the MTA Trip Planner to find out what letter and number trains will take you between your stops. If you plan your routes ahead, riding the Subway will be a breeze.

  3. Know the busiest stations and times Some of the busiest subway stations are Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, and Penn Station. If you're traveling during peak hours, expect crowds and longer wait times. Rush hour is typically between 7-9am and 4-7pm on weekdays.

  4. Familiarize yourself with Uptown and Downtown When you are in the Subway, check the signs for uptown or downtown trains. If you know whether you are heading North or South, this will make sure you get on the train going the right direction.

  5. Pay attention to express trains Some subway lines have express trains that skip certain stops. Make sure to check the signs and maps to see if your train is an express or local.

  6. Exit the subway correctly When exiting the subway, look for the signs indicating the street you want to be on. Some stations have multiple exits, so make sure to choose the correct one. This can save you having to walk an extra block or 2 and cross extra streets.

The NYC subway system is an essential part of the NYC experience that shouldn't be missed. While it may seem intimidating at first, with a little bit of planning and navigation, it's a convenient and affordable way to get around the city. And, if you are in the Subway and not sure what to do, ask a local. Many people using the Subway know it inside and out and will be willing to help you. Happy travels!
